What is an ERISA plan asset

What is an ERISA plan asset?

Fiduciary status under ERISA generally attends the management of "plan assets." ERISA does not define "plan assets" but does exclude certain property from the assets of a plan. For example, if a plan invests in a security issued by a mutual fund registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940, the assets of the plan include such security but do not include any of the underlying assets of the mutual fund, solely by reason of the investment.
